After Mme. Sembrich's death in 1935, her daughter-in-law
converted her teaching studio (built in 1924) into a house museum that was
opened to the public in 1937. This Museum has been in continuous operation
every summer. Initially called a Memorial Studio, the building is now
called an Opera Museum and is located on a 4 acre parcel from her original
14 acre lakeside estate.
The charm and warmth still remain in this studio-museum of pink stucco
where Mme. Sembrich taught and spent her final summers [1922 - 34]. The 'Golden Age of
Opera' unfolds through the distinguished career and life of this famed opera singer,
recitalist and teacher who performed in all the great opera houses of Europe, then
finished her career at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC. On display are costumes, art
objects, signed photo tributes and original furniture.
Richard Wargo, opera composer, is the knowledgeable curator who
helps the unfamiliar, the musicologists as well as the 'opera buffs.' His works include A
Chekhov Trilogy (1993), and Ballymore (1999).
Location: The Sembrich Memorial Studio
Museum is in Bolton Landing, New York on Route 9-N, one half mile south of the traffic
light, on the left, and through the gate pictured above.
The grounds of the 4 acre estate property are open each
day. June 15 to September 15th, from 10 AM to 5:30 PM.
For any special need situations call the Museum Office
at (518) 644-2431.
The nearby Hilltop Cottage was built by Mme. Sembrich in
1924 as a Caretaker's Cottage (1st floor) and dorm for her vocal
students (2nd floor).
